Preschools
Data shows that a year of preschool can change the life trajectory of children living in poverty. In 2010, the Filipino government passed an act requiring all children to attend preschool before they can be accepted into the local schools. Although government preschools are free, many of the families in Upper Javier and Bicol cannot afford the transportation, uniforms or supplies for their children to attend. At the request of the communities, Together in Hope facilitated the opening of three preschool and kindergarten classes in these two communities. The preschools and kindergarten classes are taught by certified teachers from the communities. Data gathered which tracks children who have graduated from Together in Hope preschools and kindergarten classes shows those children performing above average in primary school. There are approximately 60 children enrolled each year in the two communities.
